Cliff Sandham 1917-2018 - An Appreciation
23rd April 2018
Cliff Sandham was a gentleman and a friend to many. He was originally from near Maryport and, during the war, joined the Royal Navy. He spent four years escorting merchant ships on the North Atlantic Convoy run. At the end of the war, Cliff joined the Royal Navy Concert Band in Portsmouth. He was a keen cyclist and took part in road races from Gretna Green to Lands' End and from York to Edinburgh in his younger days. He was also a keen climber and held the record for a while for being the oldest person to climb the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the Isle of Skye. Cliff went walking in the hills near Keswick every day until he was well into his nineties. He was a great fiddle player and led the BSRS for several years. Cliff faithfully travelled from his home in Keswick, with his second wife, Dorothy, to rehearsals and concerts, only rarely missing any.He also played with two groups in the Keswick area, Travelling Light and the Allerdale Fiddlers. It is hoped to organise a concert in Cliff's memory soon, together with Travelling Light and the Allerdale Fiddlers.
